Project Narrative, Annie Waters
In June of 2005, I began collecting material that would eventually become this project. The collected materials are exclusively small and portable and are generally defined as having some or all of the following characteristics:
- Iconic or commercial content
- Cultural specificity
- Discarded personal ephemera ---handwritten messages
- Transitory usage
- Geographical interest or specificity
- Narratively challenging or ambiguous references
- Availablity in multiple iterations, i.e. pop tops,crushed cans, broken glass
- Small, dry, noninfective
Found items are stored zip-lock bags with 3”x 5” cards which note date, address or location of collection. These bags are filed in large white envelopes listing zip-locks dates and contents.
To create drawings from the collection, items chosen from one bag are photocopied in formats of 8”x 8”, 18” x 18” or 24”x 24”. These images are saved in large display portfolios for future selection for finished drawings. The completed drawings are made on chosen copies with Prismacolor pencil, china marking pencil, oil pastel and ink.
My intent with future funding is to organize my collections for exhibition as:
Discardia - a transformation of discarded items which expands the original process to include:
- Presentation drawings from the present and on going collection process
- Manipulation of some of following discarded items to a new format of collaged or mounted asemblages
Project isolates and redefines the overlooked and discarded ephemera of our place and time by its formal presentation as art. Annie Waters September 2008
